Description
The title for this month is Afterlives by Abdulrazak Gurnah - EAST AFRICA
When he was just a boy, Ilyas was stolen from his parents by German colonial troops. After years away, fighting against his own people, he returns home to find his parents gone and his sister, Afiya, abandoned into slavery. Hamza, another young man, also returns home from the war and meets the beautiful, undaunted Afiya. As these young people live and work and fall in love, the shadow of a new war on another continent falls over them. A multi-generational saga of displacement, loss, and love, set against the brutal colonization of east Africa.
Join us for World Lit Now!, a book-discussion group focused on recently published, award-winning literature from around the globe. We meet in person on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 10:30 am from January through November. New readers are always welcome! Barb Jennes, Ridgefield’s Poet Laureate emerita, leads the group’s always-lively discussions. Please register below.
