Program Description

Description

Open to all writing genres, all levels of writers, ages 18 and up.

About the RidgefieldWriters.com workshops: In addition to writing and supporting each other, the purpose of each meeting is to obtain feedback from other writers about pieces we are working on. Feedback is mostly focused with respect to story structure, character depth, and "the five second moment" to each story. Grammar, style, voice are not the focus as much as the story arc and how to consider punching it.

There are three parts to each workshop. First we begin with a bit of networking and share about writing tools and topics. Next we go around the room and take turns reading a piece for feedback (limited to five minute read per writer). Lastly, we huddle in silence and write for approx. twenty minutes. Some of us use writing prompts (e.g., Jamie Cat Callan's The Writer's Toolbox), others of us use the time to continue developing a story or project.

The writing time is optional so it is okay to skip the third part. Yet many of us find it inspiring to exercise our writing muscles in the Ridgefield Library's Randolph Board Room, a glorious room lined with bookcases, each one packed with books from published Ridgefield writers, past and present. The energy in the Randolph Board Room is special. We are grateful to the Ridgefield Library for the continued availability of this special space.

What to bring: an open mind; an essay or excerpt of a writing piece you would like to get some feedback on; and, your favorite writing instrument - e.g., pen and paper, laptop, tablet, smart phone.
