Program Description

Description

There are many doorways to the sacred, not the least of which is poetry. For millennia, poets from diverse cultures have sought to capture the inexpressible and convey that mystery through language. This workshop, led by Sarah Fox and Andrew Levine, will explore doorways to the sacred through poetry, conversation, and the occasional inclusion of other art forms, such as music and visual art.

Participants are invited to bring a poem that speaks to their particular experience of the sacred and to share the work in whatever manner they choose: read it aloud, recite it, or allow other participants to read it themselves. Barb Jennes, Ridgefield poet laureate, will also give an optional writing prompt at the end of each session.

Poetry in Search of the Sacred is open to teens and adults and is not tied to any one faith or any one way of honoring the sacred.

Sarah Fox holds a graduate degree from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, where she studied Poetry and Theology as a part of her degree program. Sarah is also a conductor and keyboardist who is currently serving as the Director of Music at Jesse Lee Methodist Church in Ridgefield, CT.

Andrew Levine has led Poetry by Heart workshops for the Library that explore how a memorized poem can work on a speaker in mysterious ways. As a musician and arts administrator, Andrew serves as the music director for Danbury Methodist Church and he spent the last five-plus years working as the managing director of The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture in NYC.
