Monochromatic Color Schemes and Their Derivatives - Colored Pencil Drawing Course (open to all skill levels)
Colors have the power to convey emotion and influence the mood of the observer. In all forms of art, monochromatic color schemes are comprised of tones, tints and shades of a single hue. In this course, we will initially focus on monochromatic palettes, which provide a strong sense of visual cohesion, and learn how to create them. In later sessions, we will explore how adding one (complementary or accent) or two additional colors (analogous or triadic) can establish emphasis, make your work of art more dramatic, and direct attention toward a specific focal point. Working with colored pencils on white paper, students will be encouraged to produce the same image in four forms: monochromatic, complementary, analogous and triadic.
Materials: Pad of white drawing paper (Canson XL Mixed Media, or similar), a graphite pencil for rough sketching, white eraser, basic colored pencil set of 24+ colors, hand-held sharpener, two-pocket folder for weekly reference sheet hand-outs.
