Program Description

Description

In 2013 the Kurdish journalist Behrouz Boochani fled Iran fearing for his safety. Seeking asylum in Australia he was instead detained by the Australian government on Manus Island, a refugee detention center off the coast of Australia, for six and a half years. Boochani wrote the book during his time in the detention center while using WhatsApp on a smuggled mobile phone and sending pages to a translator in Australia who translated his writing from Farsi to English. Using a blend of prose, poetry, and philosophy he not only documents his experience, but also portrays the anguish of confinement and the calculated cruelty of the Australian refugee detention system.

The Nonfictioneers book discussion group meets on the first Tuesday of the month via Zoom (while the Library is doing online programs only) to discuss classic and contemporary non-fiction titles.
