James Lancel McElhinney, journal-artist, author, Yale alumnus and Pollock-Krasner Grant recipient, will unfold the epic story of painted books, from the Age of Exploration to the Digital Era. He will discuss how beautifully painted manuscripts largely disappeared with the invention of the printing press and how watercolor painting, which had been an expeditionary medium for mapmakers and naturalists, was embraced by studio artists such as Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent. He will also discuss how 21st century digital technology has revolutionized the printing industry, and how art is now distributed to vast online audiences. James Lancel McElhinney is an artist, author, oral historian, independent scholar and publisher. He holds an MFA in painting from Yale, and a BFA from the Tyler School of Art. McElhinney is the recipient fellowships and grants, including a 2017 Pollock Krasner Grant and a prior Visual Artist fellowship from National Endowment for the Arts. McElhinney is owner of Needlewatcher LLC, a business specializing in artist estates and cultural affairs. He lives in Manhattan with his wife, art historian Dr. Katherine Manthorne.
