Description
Veteran New York guitarist Doug Munro will perform holiday music with a gipsy jazz twist with his band La Pompe Attack as part of the Library’s Ridgefield Folk series. The band will perform Christmas and Hanukah songs in the swinging style of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. These are not the same old versions of traditional holiday songs but brand new, reworked arrangements. Doug has been presenting this annual holiday show to enthusiastic audiences since the 2011 release of his critically acclaimed CD, “A Very Gypsy Christmas.”
Doug Munro is a critically acclaimed New York-based jazz guitarist. Since 1987 he has released 18 albums as a leader and has appeared on over 50 recordings as a sideman, producer, and arranger, working with artists like Dr. John, Michael Brecker, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. He has over 75 published compositions and over 300 recorded arrangements to his credit.
In the recording field, Doug has received two Grammy nominations and two NAIRD awards. Amazon.com picked Boogaloo to Beck, which he arranged, co-produced, and on which he played, as a Top Ten Jazz CD of 2003. Doug also did orchestration on the Oscar-winning documentary film When We Were Kings.
He has written four books on jazz improvisation for Warner Brothers Publications and Alfred Music Publications. He created and directed the Jazz Studies Program at The Conservatory of Music at Purchase College in 1993 and now teaches there as Director Emeritus.
The concert is free thanks to the Friends of the Library. Tickets are given out on the day of the show starting at 1 PM. Doors open at 1:30 and the show starts at 2 PM.
