Program Description

Description

In this lecture, ArtScapades will look at the history of portraiture in art. From ancient times to today, portraiture has told us fundamental truths, whoever the subject. By looking at who was portrayed, and how, we are able to gain insights into social, cultural, and political history that no other type of painting can offer.

This lecture will include a look at works by Jan van Eyck, Rembrandt, Thomas Gainsborough, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Vincent van Gogh, James McNeill Whistler, Pablo Picasso, Marsden Hartley and more.
