Each year, the CT Poetry Circuit enlists a panel of prestigious poets to judge a statewide contest of college poets. This online National Poetry Month reading features the five student-poets honored for 2022-23: Isabella Bullock (WCSU), Oliver Egger (Wesleyan), Sara Green (ECSU), Alisa Mejia (Quinnipiac) and John Nguyen (Yale).
ISABELLA BULLOCK (senior) is a Professional Writing major at Western CT State University. After graduation in May, the Westport native will travel to Vietnam to teach English to children.
OLIVER EGGER (senior) received the Olin Fellowship from the Wesleyan University English Department. A published poet, Oliver edited and published several literary journals while at Wesleyan.
SARA GREEN (junior) is enrolled in the Secondary Education program at Eastern CT State University. Sara tutors young students and skates under the name Sylvia Wrath for the Hartford Wailers, a roller derby team.
ALISA MEJIA (senior) was awarded the Donald Hall Poetry Prize at Quinnipiac, where she studies psychology. She is also a student athlete. Alisa plans to pursue her MBA overseas as an international student.
JOHN NGUYEN (junior) majors in English at Yale University, where he received the Meeker Award for Best Essay, the National YoungArts Award for Creative Nonfiction, and the Wallace Prize for Fiction.
This year’s CT Poetry Circuit judges were poets Randall Horton, Clare Rossini, Kate Rushin, Vivian Shipley, and John Stanizzi. The program is directed by James Gentile, Professor of English at Manchester Community College. Barb Jennes will facilitate this program.
