Description
Cass Gilbert was a famous American architect. An early proponent of skyscrapers, his works include the Woolworth Building and the United States Supreme Court building. His public buildings in the Beaux Arts style reflect the optimistic American sense that the nation was heir to Greek democracy, Roman law and Renaissance humanism. In 1907, Cass Gilbert purchased an early eighteenth-century building, known as Keeler Tavern or the Cannonball House, in Ridgefield, Connecticut, to use as a summer home for the family. Gilbert improved the house and added more buildings during the next few years.
