The Photography of Weegee with Mallory Mortillaro
Art historian and educator Mallory Mortillaro will present an online ARTalk via Zoom about Ukrainian-born photographer Weegee, whose given name was Arthurs Fellig. Weegee captured some of the grittiest scenes of New York City in the middle of the 20th century. Much of Weegee's work comes from his years trailing the city's emergency service teams and documenting crime scenes, fires and day-to-day life. Weegee's instinct to turn the camera away from the main attraction and onto the gathering crowds resulted in some of the most visceral images of the day. Later in his career he was recognized by the fine art community. In the mid 1940's the Museum of Modern Art was collecting his photographs. This lecture explores the mythology behind the photographer and how he went on to be one of New York City's most important artists.
Mallory Mortillaro has ten years of teaching experience and has worked on various art research projects for museums and organizations in the New York metropolitan area. She studied at Drew University. Recently, she has been researching an impressive full-length portrait of Abraham Lincoln owned by the Hartley Dodge Foundation to uncover its provenance. In doing so it has now resulted in the piece being loaned to the National Portrait Gallery for the next five years. Here is a link with more information about this painting:
