Description
The Ridgefield Historical Society and the Library present Hiking Ruins of Southern New England: A Guide to 40 Sites in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island by Dr. Nick Bellantoni, Emeritus CT State Archaeologist. It is a guide to hiking archaeological sites in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Many people have no idea that there are archaeological sites in the area, on public lands where they are allowed to hike. There will be a reception after Dr. Ballantoni's talk hosted by the Ridgefield Historical Society.
Each of the 40 hikes are described with a map and summary of information that delivers the trail's vital statistics, including distance, difficulty, fees and permits, schedule, canine compatibility, and trail contacts. Directions to the trailhead are provided, along with a general description of what you'll see along the way. A detailed route finder (miles and directions) describes significant landmarks along the trail.
This book aims to show that there are many interesting archaeological and historical places throughout Southern New England that people can explore. Books on the Common will have copies for sale and signing..
Dr. Nick Belllantoni's name is familiar to many Ridgefielders who have been following the saga of the four skeletons discovered on the site of the Battle of Ridgefield in a private home on Main Street in late 2019. Then just about to retire as State Archaeologist, he spent days in a cold dirt basement painstakingly uncovering the remains of four young men, believed to have been soldiers.
Dr. Bellantoni is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Connecticut and received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Connecticut in 1987. Shortly thereafter he was appointed the second Connecticut State Archaeologist. He is also a former president of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut and the National Association of State Archaeologists.
