Description
Explore the Circumpolar North through the lens of an expert who has spent time there,
witnessed its fragile nature, gathered stories from Indigenous cultures who call it home, and for whom its majesty has become her life’s passion.
Through extraordinary imagery of charismatic wildlife, natural and atmospheric phenomena that occur only in these extreme environments, as well as accounts of personal experiences, the Arctic will be brought to life. This engaging interactive presentation is accompanied by authentic hands-on animal artifacts and cultural items, which participants will have the opportunity to touch and hold! Questions during the talk are enthusiastically encouraged. This event is for adults and older children, not suitable for the very young.
Arctic expert, environmental advocate, and the first Ukrainian woman to reach the Geographic North Pole, Moki Kokoris is also the founder of 90-north - an outreach education program series that features a broad range of topics relating to the Circumpolar North, covering all disciplines from Anthropology to Zoology. She is a member of the Explorers Club and a United Nations Global Communications representative, in the capacity of which she attends annual Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues conferences. Moki is also a freelance artist, graphic designer, calligrapher and art instructor specializing in Arctic cultures and Indigenous visual folk arts.
This program is part of the Library's scholarly series, The Curious Mind: Exploration and Discovery, made possible by the generosity of the Friends of the Ridgefield Library.
