Description
Ridgefield Independent Film Festival movie stills will be on view from May 2 to May 21 in the Library's Gallery in advance of the Film Festival which takes place from May 18 - 21 all over town.
This exhibition titled "still / motion" is curated by Spencer Eldridge who is quoted below:
"Asking a film to be judged by a single frame is like asking
a person to be judged by a single word. That is the weight
each frame of film must bear. Character, mise en scéne,
the moment of action/decision and “save the cat” moments
(when the viewer connects with the hero) dictate the frame.
From atmospheric perspective to extreme close-up, these are
decisions the director and cinematographer must make to
tell their story. The language of painting and filmmaking volley
back-and-forth in this exhibition. (The influence of
paintings on filmmakers is well documented.)
This exhibition explores the duality of a still frame existing
independently within the medium of pictures in motion.
Curated from film stills of the 2023 Ridgefield Independent
Film Festival Official Selections, "still / motion" celebrates
the art and mystery of the picture within the picture."
