Did you know is was against French law for women to wear pants until 2013?
Join us in welcoming renowned non-fiction author Sarah Albee as she discusses her new book "Troublemakers in Trousers." Just in time for election day, this book explores women who broke the gender rules to lead and fight. This family event is open to everyone interested in the topics of fashion, women's rights, history, or writing for children and teens. While this is a book geared for grades 3-8, it appeals to teens and adults in its approachable, bite-sized stories that inform and enlighten.
Books on the Common will sell copies of Sarah's new book and her talk will be followed by a meet & greet and signing. Registration is NOT required, but encouraged to ensure enough seating and materials.
The summary from the publisher: "Meet twenty-one women throughout history who broke fashion and norms to do something groundbreaking in this unique middle-grade collection that celebrates trailblazers and troublemakers. Girls and women have historically been denied access to work, been blocked from the arts, refused the opportunity to lead and fight, and much more, simply because of their gender. From Hatshepsut to Joan of Arc to Frida Kahlo, Troublemakers in Trousers highlights twenty-one women who, for different reasons, wore men’s clothing, pretended to be men, and broke the rules in order to do something they wanted—or needed—to do. The perfect modern-day introduction to women throughout history who broke boundaries and pushed the limits set by society."
Ms. Albee has written over 20 books for children and tweens including Bugged: How Insects Changed History, Why’d They Wear That?, Poison: Deadly Deeds, Perilous Professions and Murderous Medicines, Dog Days of History, and Poop Happened: A History of the World From the Bottom Up.
