LUMINOSITY IN ART - Bringing Light Into Your Colored Pencil Drawings

(though not required, prior drawing experience is an advantage)

Used to create the illusion of light coming from within a work of art, luminosity is an aspect that directs the eye and adds definition, contrast and emphasis to specific objects, figures or elements of a scene. Whether it is natural (sun, candle) or artificial (incandescent or fluorescent), deliberately-placed and accentuated lighting generates an emotional response in the observer of the work of art.

In this class, students will learn how to illuminate a chosen subject or composition through color, hue, value, and exaggerated contrast. After an introduction to basic terminology (i.e. chiaroscuro, raking light, inner vs outer glow), the class will explore various lighting effects including moonlight, sunlight traveling through mist or tree branches, alpenglow, candlelight and neon light.

We will work with colored pencils predominantly on toned (grey or tan) and black paper.

PLEASE REGISTER FOR THE FIRST CLASS ON 9/23, and you will be considered enrolled for the entire course of seven sessions.
