Program Description

Description

Please join us for a charming and intimate French documentary, Être et Avoir (To Be and To Have). The title refers to the two verbs children and beginners first learn. The film will be shown with French subtitles for an immersive experience. If you are unable to understand all the words, the film will still be enjoyable. Anette Roth, the library's French teacher, will lead us through the film with pauses for discussion.

In a small village of rural France, devoted schoolteacher Georges Lopez sensitively educates 12 children, ages 4 to 11 years old. Over the course of a year, Lopez instructs them all in one small classroom with the traditional tools of French teaching: rote repetition and the dictation of literary passages for copying. Director Nicolas Philibert won several awards for this touching, popular documentary.
