This interactive book discussion with poet, activist and Baldwin scholar, JP Howard, invites participants to discuss and reflect on the continued relevance of James Baldwin’s two autobiographical essays included in his book,The Fire Next Time. While written in 1963, issues of race, family, and life in America, discussed in those essays, remain timely today.
JP Howard is a poet, educator, literary activist, curator and community builder. Her debut poetry collection, SAY/MIRROR, was a Lambda Literary finalist. She is also the author of bury your love poems here (Belladonna*) and co-edited Sinister Wisdom Journal Black Lesbians--We Are the Revolution! JP has received fellowships and grants from Cave Canem, VONA, Lambda Literary and Brooklyn Arts Council. She curates Women Writers in Bloom Poetry Salon, a NY-based monthly literary series, which is open to all writers. Her poetry is widely anthologized. JP has facilitated community discussions, writing workshops and lectures on James Baldwin for Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn Community Pride Center, The Hobart Festival of Women Writers, and in collaboration with Apogee Journal and New York Writers Coalition’s Writing Resistance Series. http://www.jp-howard.com
