Online ARTalk: Paintings of the Dutch Golden Age with Dr. Michael Norris

Focusing on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings by Frans Hals, Jan Vermeer, Rembrandt von Rijn, and others, this ARTalk will begin with a concise history of the Dutch—how they broke away from Spain, set up their own republic, and came to be a wealthy world power during the 17^th century. Norris will talk about how Dutch art during this heyday was plentiful, of high quality, and rather realistic focusing mostly on portraits, scenes of everyday life, called genre paintings, and landscapes rather than history paintings known for showing religion, mythology, and history in grandiose terms. Norris received his Ph.D in art history from the University of California at Santa Barbara, spent twenty years at the Met Cloisters and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and has lectured on trips all over the world.
