Join us for a lecture with Jen Mathy.
Maurice Sendak's Truth in Fiction Sendak used an unlikely form, the picture book, to explore his own childhood crises, to enhance character, and to achieve “truth” in his made-up stories. “I refuse to lie to children,” he said. How did Sendak use personal trauma to inform his work – without letting the personal become the story?
Jen Mathy is an independent consultant providing social media management, public relations, advertising, and strategic brand development for a variety of clients. She holds an MFA in Writing and Literature from Bennington College and gave portions of this presentation as her graduate lecture.
This program is part of the Library's The Illustrative World of Maurice Sendak: Let the Wild Rumpus Begin! series, an all ages celebration of Maurice Sendak's artistic and literary legacy taking place this fall. The series is made possible thanks to the Friends of the Library.
