Program Description

Description

How does a 22-year-old who was raised by a single mother in a crime-ridden neighborhood and who struggled to overcome a serious speech impediment end up on center stage at President Joe Biden’s Inauguration? With POETRY – a genre embraced for its ability to transcend and heal.

Join Ridgefield Poet Laureate Barb Jennes for a 90-minute presentation where we will watch clips of Ms. Gorman’s poetic performances since her appointment as Los Angeles’ first-ever youth poet laureate in 2014, plus others in which the inaugural U.S. Youth Poet Laureate discusses the hills she has climbed in her rise to fame.

Then, we will revisit her breathtaking reading of “The Hill We Climb” and do a close study of the text to get a fuller appreciation of the genius at work. Please join us as we celebrate this remarkable young poet and her amazing poetic gift. Please register below to receive the confirmation and reminder Zoom links.
